Dan Heywood – Quality gardening in and around Norwich
Our garden was a complete blank canvas when we purchased our new house … in stepped Dan to help us with the overall design, plant selection and planting up. He advised us of the best options and choices right along the gardening journey.
Dan helped us create a lovely mix of central raised beds, inter-connecting paths, peripheral beds for fruit trees and a lawn area designated for garden picnics and play. Our garden is now a joy to be in, drought resistant – mostly coastal and Mediterranean plants – and low in maintenance.
Dan is a knowledgeable guy – give him a call to see how he can help you with your gardening or landscaping project.
I purchased a flat in Brighton that had stood empty for a year. The garden was totally overgrown and Dan brought it back to a wonderful city coastal garden.
He returned to maintain the garden and always arrived when expected and carried out all the tasks that we discussed. He had to remove large quantities of debris through the flat and was always careful not to leave dirt inside. Dan charged exactly what we discussed for each job I commissioned him to do.
I was very sad that he left Brighton and would have happily recommended him to friends in Brighton had he stayed.
Dan has been both an inspirational gardener and a real pleasure to work with – his knowledge and understanding of plants combined with focus and hard work has meant that my garden has flourished. I have particularly appreciated how Dan has made suggestions and alterations to planting and designs that have helped the garden hold together whilst at the same time allowing for the freedom and movement that had been so lacking up until now.
Having worked with several gardeners it has been so helpful to have someone such as Dan who has been totally reliable, great in keeping in contact and thoughtful about keeping things tidy. It has been a source of much enjoyment to come home from a busy day at the office to enjoy a garden that has been tended with not only with real expertise but great care and attention to detail – I have felt inspired to keep on creating myself.
Our school has extensive grounds and we struggled to find a good gardener until Dan came along. Dan offers a very rare service: he is efficient, creative, reliable and affordable. The garden he created is a balm that soothes the souls of all our students (and staff!) and he even created a vegetable garden to supply our café with fresh fruit and vegetable which we just could not do without. Come back to Sussex Dan!
Quite simply, Dan does what he says he will do, when he says he will do it. He is reliable and the quality of his work and attention to detail is first class.
I am very sorry indeed that my gardener Dan Heywood is leaving Brighton. He has looked after my quite large plot for years and has done a sterling job. If I tell him what to do he does it faithfully. But, as I am no gardener myself, I usually leave it up to him to do what has to be done throughout the seasons and I have never been disappointed. He is meticulous, reliable and gives very good value for his modest fee.
So, I would recommend him to any one. It was my idea to write this, not his and if it helps him to find customers I will be very pleased for him.
Thank you so much for all the wonderful work you’ve put into the garden over the years.
The garden has flourished under your guiding spirit. Thank you so much
Thank you for the lovely garden.
When we moved in to our new house the garden was a small tricky shaped mud patch – very daunting. Our brief to Dan was for a child friendly but visually interesting garden with height and interest to break up the hard lines of the surrounding fences and buildings.
Dan really took the whole family’s needs for the garden in to consideration and created a design that we all love. He cleverly zoned the garden which makes the small space feel more spacious and interesting and gives both adults and kids their own areas of the garden. He created a stunning central raised bed and path configuration which is a beautiful centre point to the garden. To one side of this is a cosy little lawn area surrounded by fruit trees and the children’s pretty play house. To the other side is a more spacious lawn flanked by silver birch on which the children have room to play. Probably the most notable aspect of the garden is the excellent planting scheme that Dan created for us. As novice gardeners we knew that we wanted a seaside/cottage garden feel, but we would have been totally lost with selecting the right plants. Dan expertly selected plants that give height, softness, movement and colour.
The garden is now over 3 years old and the planting has matured really well, with Dan’s guidance on maintenance being invaluable. Thank you!
I’m proud to say I was one of Dan’s first customers in Brighton!
My garden is 80 feet long with difficult grassy areas and backs on to woodland – and it would be fair to say that when Dan arrived on the scene it was a tad wild! About a third of it was clogged with brambles and the rest was out of hand. The “soil” is mostly chalk and the garden is frequently assaulted by foxes and badgers.
Dan’s brief was to clear the brambles; create a wild garden with alliums and daffodils adjacent to the woods; and maintain the rest of the garden – without disturbing Nature too much, as wild flowers, insects and other creatures are important to me. This he has done with great sensitivity for many years – never being too brutal, but being firm enough to keep things in order! I’m not the world’s greatest gardener so have appreciated his advice and input as well as his ability to put into practice what I have had in mind.
Dan is an extremely hard worker and can do in a morning what it would take me days to do. We have coined the phrase “the garden has been Danned” for after his visits, when everything is orderly and peaceful and the garden basks under his attention. Even the odd cup of tea from me doesn’t seem to have stopped him from getting things done!
In addition to his gardening skills and knowledge, Dan is reliable, honest, trustworthy and kind – all things of great value when you are choosing someone to do such an important job for you. I for one will miss him dreadfully. Lucky Norfolk!
